Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Xi Zeta Omega Chapter, Washington, DC

XZO - What We Are About

Xi Zeta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered January 16, 1982. From the beginning, youth initiatives have been an important focus of the chapter's programs. Under the umbrella of the Ivy AKAdemy, developed by the sorority's International Program Committee to serve as a comprehensive learning center model for all educational training and human resources development experiences, Xi Zeta Omega has supported the youth of our city in a number of ways. Our services include a partnership with a local high school to enhance the educational experiences of its students. Through this partnership, the chapter has provided a tutorial program, an annual scholarship to a graduating senior, and financial assistance to support students.

Other education-related activities supported by the chapter include: city-wide scholarships to graduating seniors from a D.C. Public School, book scholarships, and support to the United Negro College Fund.

Xi Zeta Omega chapter has also developed youth-centered programs designed to strengthen the Black family. They include: the Youth Services Awards Program; the Youth Oratorical Contest; and the Zuberi Musa Project, to name a few. Other programs sponsored by the chapter include: Alpha Kappa Alpha Black Dollar Month, which promotes economic empowerment through the support of black-owned businesses; a blood donor recruitment project designed to increase the number of black donors in the Washington community; support to a local homeless shelter for families; support to a local residential community for senior citizens; and financial contributions to several community-based organizations.
